California Voters Crush Socialist Billionaire Tax In Resounding Ballot Box Rebuke

Golden State voters rejected union boss Dave Regan's radical wealth tax, proving working families have had enough of tax-and-spend schemes that drive jobs and investment away.

Even in deep-blue California, voters drew a hard line against socialist wealth redistribution at the ballot box this week. A controversial union-backed initiative known as Proposition 40 was decisively rejected by voters across the Golden State, according to election reports from the New York Post and Fox News. In our view, everyday Americans know that punitive tax grabs do not fix broken government budgets; they simply destroy economic opportunity and push job creators out the door.

The defeat marks a massive failure for labor boss Dave Regan, president of SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West, whom the New York Post dubbed the biggest election loser after his union squandered tens of millions of dollars on two failed ballot initiatives. The New York Post reported that Proposition 40 went down in flames with nearly 56% of voters opposing the one-time wealth tax. Just the News similarly reported that the measure failed to pass, tallying roughly 52.4% opposition with nearly four million ballots cast against it.

A Crushing Blow to Redistributive Schemes

As Fox News reported, Proposition 40 aimed to impose a retroactive 5% wealth tax on Californians with more than $1 billion in assets, backed heavily by the Democratic Socialists of America. But Richard Stern, an economics scholar with Advancing American Freedom, warned on Fox News that the policy completely misunderstood capital and business assets.

“We're taking the means of production out of the hands of people that built those businesses, that manage those businesses, and giving them to Bernie Sanders and AOC and politicians to run them”

The push revealed deep fractures across the left, as the New York Post noted that while figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders campaigned for the tax, Gov. Gavin Newsom and Gov.-elect Xavier Becerra opposed it. Fox News reported that Newsom warned the proposal would create competitive disadvantages and drive residents away. To protect taxpayers, voters also passed Proposition 42 to prohibit new personal property taxes, according to Just the News.

“Voters were skeptical of claims it would be temporary and they were rightly worried this would drive wealthy Californians out of state”

Union Dues Torched on Radical Agendas

While working families struggle with everyday costs, union leadership spent fortunes attempting to force this measure through. The New York Post detailed that SEIU-UHW's committee spent $37.3 million through mid-October backing the billionaire tax, while burning another $11 million on Proposition 44, a healthcare clinic mandate that voters crushed with 82% opposition. Over the years, Regan's union has wasted more than $100 million in member dues on losing propositions, according to an estimate from a California Democratic strategist reported by the New York Post.

Instead of focusing on pocketbook relief for working members, union brass pushed an agenda that backfired entirely. We think this crushing outcome sends an unmistakable signal to Sacramento: ordinary Americans refuse to foot the bill for far-left economic experiments that chase away wealth and undermine state prosperity.
