West Hollywood, California has officially expanded municipal recognition to polyamorous unions, according to Breitbart. The city council voted unanimously on Tuesday to permit groups of three or more people to file domestic partnerships, The Post Millennial reports. Multi-partner groupings such as throuples and foursomes can now formally register with local authorities, Breitbart notes.

According to The Post Millennial, individuals in polyamorous households can file official documentation directly with the city clerk. Breitbart reports that while this registration does not grant the traditional legal benefits of marriage, it guarantees municipal protections such as hospital visitation access and tenant safeguards.

Advocate Christina Fialho originally presented the multi-partner proposal to Councilmember Chelsea Lee Byers in 2025, The Post Millennial reports. Breitbart notes that the municipality previously expanded its protected class designations to shield diverse relationship structures from discrimination. Similar polyamorous partnership ordinances were previously adopted in Somerville and Cambridge, Massachusetts, according to The Post Millennial.
