President Donald Trump finalized sweeping new Medicare policies that will slash expenses for seniors by over $1 billion next year, an administration official told The Daily Signal. The Daily Signal reports that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is ending intentional outpatient drug overpayments to pass hospital discounts directly to patients. Under the updated payment rates, the average affected senior will save $900 on outpatient drug co-pays at 340B hospitals in 2027, according to the outlet.
“Next year, America’s seniors will save over $1 billion on high-cost drugs, like infusions to treat cancer, and over $2 billion over the next decade on common services such as heart ultrasounds, bone density scans, and chest X-rays”
The Daily Signal reports that seniors will save $1.1 billion on high-cost medications because of the administration's policy changes. In addition, an administration official told The Daily Signal that past overpayments created incentives for hospitals to acquire independent clinics. The outlet notes that the agency is also capping hospital outpatient costs for routine scans and ultrasounds at doctor's office rates.
“This action lowers premiums and eliminates bad incentives that have driven up prices, building on President Trump’s efforts that have already reduced health care costs”
According to The Daily Signal, seniors are projected to save $2.4 billion over the next decade on routine imaging services including chest X-rays and heart ultrasounds. An administration official confirmed to the outlet that President Trump remains committed to lowering daily expenses for seniors across the country.
